About

Welcome! In the real world my name is Mark Sullivan.  I am a freelance journalist & musician; Senior Contributor, All About Jazz.com; and write on comics here at mrvertigocomics.com & No Flying, No Tights.com. I have a special interest in “mature readers” comic books, especially those published by DC Comics under their Vertigo imprint. My writing history includes book reviews for Library Journal and Salem Press, and I was a regular contributor of recording reviews to Option Magazine. I am currently a Contributor (as well as Article Editor) at the website All About Jazz and a moderator at the Captain Comics website.

So happy to find this blog! With the Vertigo imprint being retired last year, and now comiXology’s store (and its personalised recommendations along with it) disappearing outside of US/UK, I’ve been fretting about how I’ll learn of new books in this specific collection of genres: alt-reality fantasy written for adults, often based on myth, legend, and history.

Thank you for writing this! If you have any other sources for news/coverage of this particular subset of comicsdom, I’d love the recommendations.

    • Glad you’re here, Kevin! I don’t know of anything comparable to my blog (that’s why I created it!). I get comics news from The Beat, the Captain Comics forum (captaincomics.ning.com; I’m a Moderator there), and I subscribe to several creator’s Substack newsletters.

    Overdue post:

You know, it took me a while to figure out where I knew you from. First I thought you were the Mark local to me, whom you vaguely resemble. But I took a closer look and– nope, off the mark. Then I saw that you lived in NC and wondered for two seconds if you were my old housemate Mark from many decades ago, but you don’t look like that guy at all, even factoring in the passage of time. Eventually, I wound up here and realized, wait, it’s a Captain Comics guy! I should probably post at his blog.

    Then I didn’t.

    Now I have.
