Minor Arcana Volume One: The Fool
Jeff Lemire, writer & illustrator; Patricio Delpeche, colorist (Issue#5); Steve Wands, letterer
BOOM! Studios, 2025
Theresa’s mother has fallen ill, and as a bitter young misanthrope, returning to her small Canadian hometown of Limberlost to take care of her phony psychic of a mom is the last thing on her mind. She is immediately reminded of many things she wanted to forget, including her grandpa and her lover Melissa (now married with a child). But when Theresa does a Tarot card reading and finds out these abilities might be real after all–she goes to a mysterious ghost hotel when she spreads the cards (which also provide each issue with a subtitle)–it will be up to her to reconcile with her ailing mother, confront the failures of her past, and help the townsfolk she had run from when she escaped to the big city. Lemire’s artwork has become thoroughly familiar by now, especially when the story has a Canadian setting. This new series feels like a combination of old and new, with an intriguing first chapter.

The previous compilation revealed secrets about the Strangers, promising further developments. But these stories go back to earlier issues in the series, explaining where the kids of the Academy came from and where they are going. They are told by a group of guest artists in the form of four Interruptions. To start with, the grown-ups were all dead. This book inclues man-eating frogs, stolen babies, psychotic bankers, kids who live in movie theaters, and a friendly lighthouse keeper. It is time to find out how the world ended.
